NEWS$show=/search/label/news

Here's where you'll find all the latest news about technology for children. We love to follow cool new inventions on Kickstarter and we hunt out all the latest announcements about tech toys and gadgets for the coming Christmas holidays. You'll also get our take on children's technology stories in the media.

REVIEWS$show=/search/label/review

Our kids technology product reviews are intended to help you work out whether a toy, gadget or kit is a good fit for your child or family. There's lots of cool stuff available, but is it the right choice for the child or teenager that you are buying for? We'll help you make the right choices and get the best value for money.

GIFT GUIDES$show=/search/label/gift%20guide

Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends assemble. We create gift lists to help you make good choices for kids technology which helps them develop the right skills for the future. We research the best in Coding Toys and Games, Making / Craft Tools and Kits, STEM/STEAM related gifts, Programmable Robots, Electronics Kits and Gadgets for Tech Age Kids and Teens.

PROJECTS$show=/search/label/project

Get crafty with technology. Here we'll post all our ideas and projects using technology to get creative and making with kids. You'll find anything from making a lemon battery to a glow-in-the-dark Minecraft sword. Our projects are tried and tested on our own kids or at events we run, so we are sure you can have a go at home with your kids. Some of our projects use specific tech gadgets which we provide links for you to purchase.

STEM$show=/search/label/stem

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In recent years there is an increased focus in these areas of study. We like to include Art and Design too, so we often talk about STEAM (A stands for Art). At Tech Age Kids we believe Coding is a new literacy and children need to understand how technology works, practice making skills and grow in their curiosity to make a better future for us all.

CODING$show=/search/label/coding

Coding is increasingly being recognised as an important skill for children to learn. Some will learn to code at school or at a coding club, but it's brilliant if they get support at home too.

ELECTRONICS$show=/search/label/electronics

We think it's really important for kids to get hands-on with electronics and learn how to make circuits and write code to control hardware. Younger kids can start with conductive playdough. For kids who like to combine craft and tech, littleBits are fab. And we love SAM Labs wireless electronics components for making it easy for kids to make Internet of Things inventions. Lots of electronics kits for kids have support for the Arduino microprocessor environment. The DuinoKit Jr is one of our favourites. Arduino is a fab skill for older kids and teens to develop.

ROBOTICS$show=/search/label/robotics

We love robots at Tech Age Kids, especially programmable ones. We've got lots of them and write reviews and projects that use them. Our programmable robots for kids buying guide is a good place to start if you're not sure what's available. Roby the mBot Meccano robot dog is one of our popular projects and has been with us to lots of events. Our Ozobot LEGO trailer is fab for kids who love LEGO and robots.

MAKING AND CRAFT$show=/search/label/making

We're advocates of the creative use of technology, but this needs to be balanced with developing physical skills such as papercraft, woodwork, clay modelling, technical drawing and soldering. If children don't develop these skills as they grow up then physical making projects can become frustrating rather than fun. The Maker Community uses the term 'making' as a broad term to include all sorts of artisan skills or craft activities. Being able to make things can lead to life-long hobbies or even careers. It's a great feeling to be able to take a project from an idea in your head to a real object that does something. We're particularly interested to explore products that combine maker skills with tech skills such as electronics but others focus purely on the physical making skills that are still important to modern making.

🥽Meta Quest 3 VR Headset Games and Apps for Kids

Meta have recently announced that the age rating for the Meta Quest 3 has been reduced from 13 to 10. Preteens can now officially play VR games on one of the most popular VR headsets. We've taken a look at the best games for this age which should help if you're deciding whether to invest in a VR headset for a family that includes tweens.

What is the Meta Quest 3?

It's a standalone VR headset with no cables that doesn't need to be connected to a computer. The Meta Quest 3 is the latest version and has been released in time for Christmas 2023. We own this device (as well as the previous Meta Quest 2). If you've got younger kids then it makes sense to get the latest model as its likely to stay supported for longer and it is an improvement on the previous version. You can read our review of the Meta Quest 3 for more details.

Meta Quest 3 Games for Under 13s

There are plenty of titles to choose from that have an under 13 age rating. We've chosen a few highlights across the range of game and app styles that are available on the Meta Quest 3.
  • Roblox is available on the Meta Quest for age 10+. This is the VR version of the popular games platform where kids can play games with other kids. Roblox have really got behind VR and they've put some effort into making sure kids get a good experience. If you've got kids who love Roblox then you might not need to read any further!
  • Moss was one of the early VR adventure games and it's gorgeous. There are lots of puzzles to solve set it beautiful surroundings with a cute mouse. There's also a more recent sequel, Moss 2 for more lovely mouse adventures.
  • The Meta Quest has some lovely apps for creating art such as SculptrVR which allows kids to create colourful worlds and invite others to collaborate. There are early reports of some glitches on the Quest 3 which will hopefully get addressed soon.
  • VR is great for exercise. Beat Saber is a VR classic with a range of music packs to appeal to different musical tastes. (The new Rolling Stones music pack probably isn't what they're after!) Just be sensible about safety measures and sensible session length.
  • There are an increasing number of educational titles available for the Meta Quest including Noun Town where you can learn another language in an immersive environment.
  • Look I'm British and I have no idea what Pickleball is other than my American friends with kids have made it clear that it's a big deal. But there's Pickleball One if you want more sport.
  • Job Simulator in its various formats is popular with this age group. Maybe we are approaching a time when traditional jobs are only found in simulators?
  • There are plenty of shooter games for VR but some aren't appropriate for this age group. Blaston is one of the tamer ones with a Pegi 7 rating for 'mild violence'. Like many VR games, it's multiplayer so make sure to pay attention to who they are playing with.
  • An exciting new release for 2023 which should appeal to tweens is LEGO Bricktales. It's a brick-building puzzle adventure and due for release on the Meta Quest 3 in December 2023 and is available to pre-order. It's already been popular on other platforms and has mixed reality capability for the Quest 3 (one of the features that has a major update over the Quest 2). Never mind the tweens, I want this one!

Safety Advice for parents and pre-teens

Along with the new age rating, Meta have released safety advice for parents and pre-teens. There's lots of advice on setting up accounts with parental controls and physical safety when using the headset. It's not just about age, a child's size does make a difference to the fit and comfort of the headset.

Summary

Although the Meta Quest 3 has only been available for 10-12 year olds for a short time, there are plenty of games and app available for their age range. Now that the official age range has been lowered we expected that game and app developers will pay more attention to this age group and bring more titles to the device. This isn't like the very early days of VR, there are now plenty of titles to choose from.

We also think the Meta Quest is a great platform for kids to learn to create content for. A quick way in is through our A-frame VR tutorial
