PROJECTS$show=/search/label/project

Get crafty with technology. Here we'll post all our ideas and projects using technology to get creative and making with kids. You'll find anything from making a lemon battery to a glow-in-the-dark Minecraft sword. Our projects are tried and tested on our own kids or at events we run, so we are sure you can have a go at home with your kids. Some of our projects use specific tech gadgets which we provide links for you to purchase.

STEM$show=/search/label/stem

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In recent years there is an increased focus in these areas of study. We like to include Art and Design too, so we often talk about STEAM (A stands for Art). At Tech Age Kids we believe Coding is a new literacy and children need to understand how technology works, practice making skills and grow in their curiosity to make a better future for us all.

Coding is increasingly being recognised as an important skill for children to learn. Some will learn to code at school or at a coding club, but it's brilliant if they get support at home too.

ELECTRONICS$show=/search/label/electronics

We think it's really important for kids to get hands-on with electronics and learn how to make circuits and write code to control hardware. Younger kids can start with conductive playdough. For kids who like to combine craft and tech, littleBits are fab. And we love SAM Labs wireless electronics components for making it easy for kids to make Internet of Things inventions. Lots of electronics kits for kids have support for the Arduino microprocessor environment. The DuinoKit Jr is one of our favourites. Arduino is a fab skill for older kids and teens to develop.

ROBOTICS$show=/search/label/robotics

We love robots at Tech Age Kids, especially programmable ones. We've got lots of them and write reviews and projects that use them. Our programmable robots for kids buying guide is a good place to start if you're not sure what's available. Roby the mBot Meccano robot dog is one of our popular projects and has been with us to lots of events. Our Ozobot LEGO trailer is fab for kids who love LEGO and robots.

MAKING AND CRAFT$show=/search/label/making

We're advocates of the creative use of technology, but this needs to be balanced with developing physical skills such as papercraft, woodwork, clay modelling, technical drawing and soldering. If children don't develop these skills as they grow up then physical making projects can become frustrating rather than fun. The Maker Community uses the term 'making' as a broad term to include all sorts of artisan skills or craft activities. Being able to make things can lead to life-long hobbies or even careers. It's a great feeling to be able to take a project from an idea in your head to a real object that does something. We're particularly interested to explore products that combine maker skills with tech skills such as electronics but others focus purely on the physical making skills that are still important to modern making.

Sphero

Sphero is now a very well established brand for children's educational robots. Most of the products in Sphero's range are spherical remotely programmable robots but they regularly experiment and bring out new products. This page gives an overview of the Sphero product range, updated for Christmas 2023. 


Sphero Indi - Age 4+

The Sphero Indi is a cute robot with wheels designed for children aged 4+. It's a great options for preschoolers who are ready for their first coding robot. 

The Sphero Indi at-Home Learning Kit is a feature-packed kits with the robot itself and lots of accessories to engage little ones. The Sphero Indi has lots of options for screenless play and learning and there's also a drag and drop coding app designed for a younger audience. 

Sphero Ball Robots - Age 5-8+

These are the robots that the Sphero brand is best know for. The current models for 2023 are the Sphero Bolt and the smaller Sphero Mini. 

Both the Bolt and the Mini are officially recommended for age 8+ although Sphero do suggest that the Sphero Mini is ideal for children aged 5-8 with adult supervision required for under 8s. 

There's a significant price difference between these which will be the deciding factor for many families. Both robots can be programmed from an app using block-based coding. The Mini has an internal colored LED while the full-featured Sphero Bolt has a grid of colored LEDs. The Mini has an accelerometer and gyroscope while the Bolt has more advanced sensors. The Mini comes in a choice of bright colours whereas the Bolt is transparent so you can see the tech inside.

If you want a reliable inexpensive robot to introduce children aged 5-12 to coding then the Sphero Mini is a great choice. If you're confident that your child aged 8+ is going to enjoy coding or you home school then the Sphero Bolt is a great choice and worth the investment. 

Sphero RVR+ - Age 12+

The Sphero RVR takes coding with robotics to the next level for teens. This high-end robot has been designed for middle-schoolers and high-schoolers. The RVR+ has an app and can be programmed with block-based coding. It can also be programmed with JavaScript (the language behind many websites). There's even a software development kit (SDK) for integrating with popular education and hobbyist microcontrollers (Raspberry Pi, micro:bit and Arduino.) While the Sphero RVR+ is quite an investment it's packed with features and extensibility options. It makes a fab gift or home school resource to take young people through to professional coding. 

Sphero Specdrums Age 6-teen

Sphero Specdrums are a departure for the main Sphero product range. They are wearable musical rings with an accompanying app. You can make music by tapping your fingers. 

Sphero Specdrums make a great gift for hard-to-by-for tweens and teens with an interest in music. 

Summary

Sphero is a solid brand. We've been reviewing and writing about Sphero products since 2015! The Sphero balls have established Sphero as a key player in robotics and coding educations in schools and at home. The newer Indi and RVR+ wheeled robots extend the age ranges of the Sphero brand taking kids right from their first coding robot through to adult education. And the Sphero Specdrums are a fun addition to the range if you're looking for something less serious. Pick the right robot for the ages of children in your family and you'll get value for money from Sphero.
