NEWS$show=/search/label/news

Here's where you'll find all the latest news about technology for children. We love to follow cool new inventions on Kickstarter and we hunt out all the latest announcements about tech toys and gadgets for the coming Christmas holidays. You'll also get our take on children's technology stories in the media.

REVIEWS$show=/search/label/review

Our kids technology product reviews are intended to help you work out whether a toy, gadget or kit is a good fit for your child or family. There's lots of cool stuff available, but is it the right choice for the child or teenager that you are buying for? We'll help you make the right choices and get the best value for money.

GIFT GUIDES$show=/search/label/gift%20guide

Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and friends assemble. We create gift lists to help you make good choices for kids technology which helps them develop the right skills for the future. We research the best in Coding Toys and Games, Making / Craft Tools and Kits, STEM/STEAM related gifts, Programmable Robots, Electronics Kits and Gadgets for Tech Age Kids and Teens.

PROJECTS$show=/search/label/project

Get crafty with technology. Here we'll post all our ideas and projects using technology to get creative and making with kids. You'll find anything from making a lemon battery to a glow-in-the-dark Minecraft sword. Our projects are tried and tested on our own kids or at events we run, so we are sure you can have a go at home with your kids. Some of our projects use specific tech gadgets which we provide links for you to purchase.

STEM$show=/search/label/stem

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. In recent years there is an increased focus in these areas of study. We like to include Art and Design too, so we often talk about STEAM (A stands for Art). At Tech Age Kids we believe Coding is a new literacy and children need to understand how technology works, practice making skills and grow in their curiosity to make a better future for us all.

CODING$show=/search/label/coding

Coding is increasingly being recognised as an important skill for children to learn. Some will learn to code at school or at a coding club, but it's brilliant if they get support at home too.

ELECTRONICS$show=/search/label/electronics

We think it's really important for kids to get hands-on with electronics and learn how to make circuits and write code to control hardware. Younger kids can start with conductive playdough. For kids who like to combine craft and tech, littleBits are fab. And we love SAM Labs wireless electronics components for making it easy for kids to make Internet of Things inventions. Lots of electronics kits for kids have support for the Arduino microprocessor environment. The DuinoKit Jr is one of our favourites. Arduino is a fab skill for older kids and teens to develop.

ROBOTICS$show=/search/label/robotics

We love robots at Tech Age Kids, especially programmable ones. We've got lots of them and write reviews and projects that use them. Our programmable robots for kids buying guide is a good place to start if you're not sure what's available. Roby the mBot Meccano robot dog is one of our popular projects and has been with us to lots of events. Our Ozobot LEGO trailer is fab for kids who love LEGO and robots.

MAKING AND CRAFT$show=/search/label/making

We're advocates of the creative use of technology, but this needs to be balanced with developing physical skills such as papercraft, woodwork, clay modelling, technical drawing and soldering. If children don't develop these skills as they grow up then physical making projects can become frustrating rather than fun. The Maker Community uses the term 'making' as a broad term to include all sorts of artisan skills or craft activities. Being able to make things can lead to life-long hobbies or even careers. It's a great feeling to be able to take a project from an idea in your head to a real object that does something. We're particularly interested to explore products that combine maker skills with tech skills such as electronics but others focus purely on the physical making skills that are still important to modern making.

πŸ“± Amazon Kids Kindle, Fire, Paperwhite and Alexa Devices for 2023 and 2024

Illustrations of electronic devices.

As usual Amazon have updated some of their range of devices for kids in 2023, in plenty of time for Christmas. There are new devices in the Fire tablet range and the Alexa assistant range. The kids Kindle eReader was updated last year and the Paperwhite the year before so those ranges don't get an update this year. In this post we'll highlight the new devices and the most recent versions of each device so you can find the lastest versions of the devices. There are lots of devices and it can be tricky to work out which device makes the most sense for your child or family. New Amazon devices usually get launched towards the end of the year so these are likely to remain the latest devices throughout most of 2024.

Amazon Fire Kids Tablets

In 2023 the major family update is to the 10" Amazon Fire tablets for children. There are two versions designed for different ages. The hardware and the price are the same for both versions.

The new Fire 10" tablets include the following features:
  • Faster hardware
  • Full HD display and upgraded camera
  • Longer battery life (up to 13 hours claimed)
  • Thinner profile and lighter weight
  • Durable design including a strengthened screen
  • Parental controls and profiles for up to 4 children per device
  • One year subscription to Amazon Kids+
Basically, the underlying device is a well-designed tablet with lots of kid-friendly design features and access to loads of educational and entertainment content with parental controls. You get a lot for your money. Amazon sell a lot of these devices and can afford to invest in regular updates.

The Amazon Fire HD 10" Kids (for age 3-7) comes with a rugged little-kid friendly case that can cope with being lugged around by an enthusiastic preschooler. It also has a built in stand so it can be popped down on a convenient table when they want to sit and watch something.

The Amazon Fire HD 10" Kids Pro (for age 6-12) comes with a more grown-up case which still has a built in stand. Both devices come in a choice of colours.

Note that the ages overlap so if you've got a child at the upper end of the age range for the younger device they will be fine with the Pro version.

The smaller 7", 8" and 8" Pro Amazon Fire devices are still available at a lower price and specification. They just haven't received an update in 2023.

Amazon Kids Kindle and Paperwhite eReaders

The Kids Kindle eReader was updated last year at the same time as the adult model and the larger Kids Paperwhite the year before.

We covered the Amazon Kindle Kids and Paperwhite eReaders in more detail last year when the new Kindle device was released. The new regular sized Kindle for kids got a pretty major update last year and is great for younger kids who are are capable readers. The larger Paperwhite is a good option for reading textbooks and it's also waterproof which might be an important factor for some families.

Alexa Devices: Amazon Echo Pop and Echo Show 5 for Kids

Amazon have released the new Echo Pop device for 2023 and it comes in kids versions with Marvel or Disney princess styling.

The Echo Pop for Kids comes with a 6 month subscription to Amazon Kids+ which has a huge library of content for kids age 3-12. This gives you chance to trial the services and see if your child makes use of it, if so you can continue with a paid subscription.

The Echo Pop for Kids also has parental controls for filtering content and setting limits on listening time.

My younger son spent hours and hours listening to audio books on an Echo device when he was in this age range. As a parent I love audio books. Kids can do something else at the same time such as drawing, playing with LEGO or tidying their room (okay, wishful thinking on that last one!)

There's a bundle with the Echo Pop for Kids and the Echo Glow which acts as a smart nightlight, mood light, or routine reminder.

There's also an updated version of the Amazon Echo Show for Kids for 2023. The Echo Show 5 is an Alexa device with a screen. The 2023 edition has had a general hardware update. One of the important upgrades for families is an improved screen which offers more comfortable viewing at nighttime.

The Echo Show for kids can be used for asking questions for homework, watching videos and making video calls. The device has parental controls so parents can decide which numbers can be called and set limits on usage. Kids+ is bundled with the device for the first year.

Summary

The new Amazon devices for kids for 2023 are:
  • Tablets: Fire 10" and Fire 10" Pro
  • Alexa devices: Echo Pop and Echo Show
