Today LEGO released a video that covers the history of the LEGO Mindstorms range. Did you know that the first kits came out fifteen years ago in 1998 after a decade of development in collaboration with Dr Seymour Papert at MIT?
LEGO Mindstorms NXT was announced at CES in 2006 and has been the current version for seven years.
Now we're getting ready for LEGO Mindstorms EV3. In some ways it's surprising how little has changed with the basic premise. EV3 just brings the idea bang up to date for the smart phone and tablet generation.
EV3 has a lot more competition from other robot kits for kids than previous versions did. But we think it stands up pretty well.
Going on the previous gaps between releases EV3 will be the kit my kids get started with - my oldest will be 7 later this year. Tech is a family hobby in our house so we'll start working on projects together fairly soon. He's already fascinated by the R3PTAR snake robot.
